小 草

A Lone Blade Of Grass1

At the foot of the huge endless wall of Time2, a wild blade of grass is barely visible, lonely and helpless.

There are no other plants around; nor even a trace of life can be found elsewhere3 —the grass stands in sharp contrast against the age-old barren land stretching far and wide under the boundless sky4.

The prevailing silence of the sombre sky is broken by cries of wild geese hurriedly returning south as winter's setting in5.The echoes remain undulating for quite a while to leave the place all the more quiet and deserted after they die away6. I can still find in the yellow tinge of its leaf-tips the imprint of a scorching sun, and in the dust on its stalks the impact of sudden gusts of wind7.

The grass seems to pay silent attention to me. It waves its foliage in a graceful dance as if responding to my smile8. The message it conveys is a firm faith it has in its own worth and a proud dignity it assumes as an independent living thing9.

What I see before me cannot be anything but a scornful watcher of the world10, a hard fighter11 against the scorching sun and sudden winds, and also a profound thinker capable of enduring all the dullness resulting from solitude and the agony of being isolated with no hope of any help12.

Try to contemplate while looking at this small blade of grass13! The relentless Fate has made things difficult for it, but you will find, being alone, it enjoys complete freedom, being helpless, it possesses tested strength; and being subjected to sufferings, it has become mindless and carefree14……

In solemnity I let my thoughts run on horseback through the wilderness, galloping from the present to the future15, and find myself a spontaneous worshipper of the grass, however humble it may be……
