Random Thoughts1

虎有自信,猫没有自信;

虎在山林,猫依附于人;

虎越来越少,猫越来越多;

虎濒于灭绝,猫却成了宠物;

Flowers

Flowers are pleasant to look at and sweet to smell. So people love them.

It’s a pleasure to see them bloom, but not a regret to see them wither, for that’s the rule of Nature, the rhythm of life in its propagation2. “Flowers’ withering presupposes their next blooming, thus offering hope for another fragrance-gathering next year.”3

Blooming and withering alternate4. When that flower fades away this comes out5, so that the earth is always full of color and beauty. The idea of letting a single flower blossom to exclusion of all the others will go nowhere6. Any one who tries to do so will soon find himself exhausted by the attempt.

It is a real flower that opens and falls. If it stays long in blossom7 it must be an artificial one which, though very nice to look at, lacks vivacity because it is lifeless.

A leaf is no worse or even better8 than a flower, as it remains green for a longer time, especially that of evergreen.

Perhaps soil is still better, humbly nurturing flowers without complaint9.

Cats

When a cat is confronted by something strange, it will stiffen its hair and arch its back—a way to magnify itself as much as possible. It aims to demonstrate its pretended10 power and dignity. Such a posture can be described in vogue words “packaging itself”11.

The tiger is of the cat family but never stiffens its hair. It needn’t12, for it is powerful and awe-inspiring, even a small one .

Tigers have self-confidence while cats have not;

Tigers live by themselves on wooded mountains while cats are dependent on man;

Tigers are becoming less and less, almost on the verge of extinction; on the other hand, cats have multiplied13 since they became pets.

Ah! The lovely cats!

Books

Books are especially useful in two ways: to enrich oneself14 and to get rid of ignorance.

I read in order to have myself entirely exposed to new ideas and great wisdom for more vivacity, to noble personality and fine tastes for an elevated mind15.

I read about others and in reading get to know more about myself16. Thus what is clouded clears up; what appears on the surface unfolds its depth17; and what is feeble gets steeled and less vulnerable……

An insight you get in a moment may benefit you for a lifetime. Isn’t it “a small investment (now a book)18 brings about a 10,000-fold profit”?
